Iowa Fetal Heartbeat Bill - Update 7-14-23
15 States have passed restrictive abortion bills....there will be more.
I live in Iowa, which has become a ‘bleeding red state,’ over the last few years.
Abortion and women’s rights are under attack as never before in America. I am starting a column today to post updates on punitive measures that are, in many cases, political. Please join in and post your updates too.
Republican Governor of Iowa, Kim Reynolds, called a special session of the Legislature to debate…and pass… a “Fetal Heartbeat Bill.” On Tuesday, July 11, the capital building in Des Moines was packed with those on either side of the issue, protestors galore and of course, the press.
Gov. Reynolds was in the session for 14 hours of debates, then finally in the evening, the vote…as expected the Republican majority carried the bill to passage. The Governor gleefully announcing that she would sign the bill Friday, July 14th.
The very next day, a challenge was filed in District Court, asking for an injunction that would stop the state from enforcing this 6-week-abortion-ban. Those filling with the court were the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and many abortion providers in Iowa.
It’s now in 3 p.m. here in Iowa and the Governor has signed the Fetal Heartbeat Bill surrounded by Republican legislators, politicians and supporting evangelicals. At the same time, down the street in Des Moines, District Court is in session….to be continued.
and the judge has announced a decision will be issued either monday or tuesday next week. stay tuned.
These bills are immoral. They crucify the rights of real, living, conscious, thinking human beings for the potential of something that can not only not think for itself, it can't breath for itself.
